State of the Art Compost Station

Our new community composting facility, made possible by Art Farm at Serenbe, is uniquely efficient and designed for enhanced airflow. Our improved setup is powered by blowers that force air through the bottom of the pile. This allows the pile to be in a steady aerobic state, increasing capacity and quality.

Why Compost

Composting is about eliminating waste and regenerative living. Roughly ⅓ of the food produced goes to waste - ending up in landfills where it produces methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more harmful than carbon dioxide.

Together, through composting, we can combat climate change while enhancing the soil that grows fresh, organic food.

HOw DOes COmposting work

Composting is a biological masterpiece! Food scraps (and more) becomes compost through the hard work of microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. During the composting process, piles heat up to over 130 degrees - producing healthy soil with no odor!

Use compostable green bags (available here, here and here) and once full, for Serenbe residents, place them in your trash can (inside/under the lid, placed on top of your other trash and recycling bags) and porters will pick them up. Or, for Serenbe and Chattahoochee Hills residents, drop off your compost at Serenbe Farms in the red wagon located at the Serenbe Lane entrance.

Finally, you may be asking “what can I compost?”. And we have answers!.

We made a handy guide on Compost Do’s and Don’ts. You can also follow the mantra, when in doubt, leave it out.
